Earlsfield history makers! ABA finals triumph

Fri, 13/04/2012

Earlsfield ABC had the ultimate night of glory when all three boxers competing in the senior ABA finals held at York hall were crowned champions after a remarkable night's boxing!
The ABA journey had started with Louis,Kirk and Joe winning their London titles in style some five weeks earlier. No one would have believed that all three would make it all the way to the final, beating boxers from right across the south of england on the way let alone win........ but thats exactly what happened on a historic night for Earlsfield ABC.

Louis Adolphe started the ball rolling and more than made up for the heartbreak of a year ago where he was narrowly outpointed in the final. On this occasion nobody was going to stand in his way and Robbie Davies (Knowlsey Vale) knew he had to disrupt and spoil the earlsfield boxers style to stand any chance of lifting the ABA light welterweight title. Louis started well throwing sharp left jabs which Davies did well to avoid before scoring himself with solid looking straight shots, Adolphe began to work the body more as the contest went on and Davies looked to hold as the bout reached the end of the second round, the final three minutes saw Adolphe land some jabs at the start of the round with Davies attempting to counterpunch, Adolphe was coming forward relentlessly and Davies continued to hold inside as he tried to stem the Adolphe advance but despite this Adolphe still got through with enough body shots to take the majority verdict from the judges and the coveted ABA light welterweight title.

At Light heavyweight Kirk Garvey took on Macclefield ABC's Peter Bebbington, Garvey had already beaten the reigning ABA champion o his way to the final and was the favourite to take the title but he had to work for it against the tough Bebbington, Garvey looked to land powerful left hooks from the opening bell and Bebbington did well to soak up the early pressure from Garvey, Bebbington found a bit more self belief in the second round and began to get though with combinations but during the third Garvey landed solid right hands and uppercuts to sway the judges in his favour and lift the title.

The pressure was on Joe Joyce as he entered the ring after seeing his clubmates secure wins and Joyce capped a memorable night for all connected with Earlsfield when he outpointed Frazer Clarke (Burton ABC) in the final contest of the night. Clarke started well and looked to try and overpower joyce from the first bell, Joyce moved well but could not escape the big right hands from Clarke, the second round began with Joyce stepping forward throwing jabs before following up with solid looking right hands, as the round went on joyce took control and as the contest went in the final round Joyce was clearly in front. Clarke looked for the big shot to end it at the start of the third but Joyce responded with combinations and another big right hand brought about a standing count for Clarke and at the final bell Clarke had nothing left and joyce was crowned champion, Joyce celebrated with a backflip and the Earlsfield faithful roared there approval on a night which will be etched in to the memory and history books forever!
